Fibromyalgia: understanding the disease, relieving pain!

Fibromyalgia, what causes it and how does one overcome the symptoms to regain one’s quality of life? Patients suffering from this disease feel constantly weak and sick with doctors finding nothing wrong. Regarded as a kind of wastebasket diagnosis without a specific disorder, fibromyalgia was the term used when people feel pain everywhere but nothing was really wrong.

What is Fibromyalgia syndrome (FMS)?

Fibromyalgia is a muscular or soft tissue rheumatism characterized by pulling, tearing, shooting sensation with stiffness and immobility of the affected parts. Fibromyalgia is a disease of muscle inflammation but with no progressive degenerative nerve disease or deterioration. It is aggravated by any strenuous exertion or movement and causes widespread body pain associated with the actual or potential tissue damage.

Symptoms of Fibromyalgia

This occurs mainly with women between the ages of 30 and 60 complaining of muscle and joint pain like being bruise all over. Although patient shows severe fatigue, sleep disturbances which means momentarily stop breathing during the night, headaches, and irritable bowel, all laboratory tests seem to be normal and unremarkable. The patient also experiences more pain with each menstrual cycle. The disease is also common in women with prolactin levels. Widespread aching and diffuse stiffness is agreed to be the universal symptom of Fibromyalgia. It makes the patient greatly sensitive to cold, exhibits tooth grinding, develops depression, experiences dry eyes and mouth, severe headaches, rhinitis, and skin, hair and nail problems. It is also manifested by memory loss, brain fog or confusion like a sensory overload. They exhibit restless leg syndrome which marked their inability to keep still in bed.

Causes of Fibromyalgia

No physical, biological and environment factors nor any single cause has been linked with the disease so far. The only consolation is that it does do any permanent damage to the muscles, joints and organs. Obviously it can be triggered by physical trauma like accident, injury, or severe illness that affects the central nervous system still it remained a theory and is not specific. This is usually present in high functioning hard driving over achieving regular people. This case is still a topic for on going discussion between different medical fields.

Pressure point test for determining the illness

Examination of multiple tender joints at specific sites where the muscle is specifically inserted into the bone found on both the right and left side of the body can be done by applying moderate pressure estimate of 4 kg which is just enough to whiten the thumbnail. Patients expected responses could be intensified pain when pressed. Trigger points and tender points note occurrence of dry chronic tension and contraction of muscle fibers. This generally impairs the local circulation to the muscle on the affected area. Pressure on this trigger point causes varied degree of pain from mild discomfort to acute pain. Sustained pressure causes temporary ease of the soreness but may cause pain to nearby areas served by the same nerves.

Drawback of pressure point test for trigger points

The tender points tend to wax and wane in severity over time.

Severity of pain

In good days a minimum of three or four trigger points may create disturbances but in bad days it could surmount to twenty or more trigger points.

Pathology of fibromyalgia

There is no overt pathology gathered in FMS because no consistency was found in the result of its electrodiagnostic studies, muscle biopsies, and laboratory test. Poor understanding of this condition made no progress in devising effective easy treatments. Patients just need to learn to adapt to the limitations that comes with the illness where even simple movements like putting on clothes, carrying packages or walking causes pain. The affected region maybe the entire left or right side of the body, below or above the waist and the axial skeleton where the diffused burning or pain is often accompanied by muscle spasm.

Intervention

FMS has no known cure but management strategies may help lessen the pain of the patient.
