Born without legs he quickly became the main attraction to where ever he goes. People are curious. Some may feel pity while most of them are greatly amazed. Effectively capturing different emotional responses by the look at their faces, he dared take photos of the faces of those who stared at him without asking them. He had traveled around the world sometimes on a solo trip. Dare to stare at the guy without legs and he will snap at you back with his camera. He rides with his skateboard to get to places.
In the process he had created a portfolio of individuals from the countries he had visited. Kevin Conolly “The Rolling Exhibition” artist created a gallery of faces from different places and put their beauties on sale at his website. It practically turned the watcher into the watched. What he discovered in the process was spectacular. He observed that people gave diverse expressions of pity, sadness or curiosity looking at him. He was branded as the legless guy on a skateboard. He noticed that at those moments people became incredibly emotionally vulnerable as they open up themselves. An inspiration and a challenge for the youth to face their own problems and limitations, Kevin portrays the role of a real inspiring physically challenged individual.
The birth defect
He was born without legs but the rest of his body is fine. All of his organs are intact and are fully functional. He protects and cushions his torso by using a custom body shoe that looks like a leather bowl covered on the outside custom made by a prosthetics manufacturer.
Accomplishments
Kevin’s parents treat him like an ordinary human being with complete body parts. They perfectly encouraged him to explore the world outside taking him camping, hiking and to many other outdoor activities. He became an avid rock climber and a champion skier. He had won a silver medal in the 2007 X-Games. The prize gave him a headstart to travel around the world alone. Kevin began skateboarding and taking photographs in 2005. he works now as a professional photographer and a professional skier. Kevin became known with his first photo gallery project online called as “The Rolling Exhibition”. He is a senior film student at Montana State University located in Bozeman, MT. He had directed two short film productions already with his third as work-in-progress.
His websites
Kevin’s “The Rolling Exhibition” gallery can be found in this link http://www.therollingexhibition.com. His personal website can be found in this link www.kevinmichaelconnolly.com.
The observer’s funny experiences
Kevin observed that people do not ask how he came to be what he is physically – the legless guy. Yes maybe because they find it awkward and unprofessional to ask and maybe because people feel morally responsible to give more push and encouragement to this legless guy who strive to continue his acts of bravery and independence. The idea is compassion, interest in his life, surprise at his live-to-dare attitude and the open willingness to help in any way possible. As he said it, people were completely emotionally open when they see him.
So let’s smile at how he was treated. People automatically supplied their own narrative suited to their own environment or personal sensibilities. In New Zealand Kevin was asked by a woman if he was a victim of a shark attack. So there are many sharks in New Zealand huh? People in Romania thought he was a beggar. So Romanians beggar copied him? Of course he is original, smile. A man also bought him a beer and thanked him for his service at a bar in Montana. He believed Kevin was a wounded veteran in the Iraq war. So this guy has been reading a lot about Iraq and 9/11.
He definitely accepted these remarks without recourse to the person and without feeling any form of humiliation or depression. Instead he kind of treats it like a gateway to knowing people, their emotion, their experiences and the context of their environment. They project what they had witnessed or experienced in their lives which is not meant to harm or insult him. He fully understand nature and with his disability he became the most able man ever to do the things any man with complete body structure can do.
The moral lesson
I have a herniated disc and sometimes feel depressed with the numbness of my legs and the chronic back pain that I have. Although I retired from work due to this medical condition, I never gave up generating income by exploring the net and making money out as a Freelance Writer and a Virtual Assistant. My lymphangioma neck operation all the more limited my strength and my mobility. I discovered that it kept me from doing some physical activities. I refocus and put my passion to help people by writing blogs and sometimes earn from it when blog advertising services give me assignments. I never know the existence of these things in the net. I made it because I was quite determined to meet up financial obligations and made long hour research on what seems to be aligned with my writing talent and passion. Discovering the net fulfilling my passion and making that talent worked for me. I earn little yet but I am sure I can make it. This is still my 16th month of internet money making endeavor. I would like to discover more on how to generate income through the net without having to sit for long in my computer because my back will be very painful then.
People come and go in our lives and each of them has a different story to tell. I would like to see that these people know that in each of us there is something unique that we can tap on. It is our God given talents. Depression could be a part of it but we can blog our way out of those negative emotional setbacks. We are to strive every day finding solutions to our problems and never minding if we get insulted or humiliated in the process. People do bad things because of their own experiences and personal context we don’t have the power to change. But we all have the power to change our lives for the better. We can live a good life and maintain a healthy well being. The net is boundless and there are still good guys out there that talks with tact and respect and sees things in an objective manner. There are plenty of works in the net as long as we keep on praying too that we will have our share in those opportunities. The lesson is never let depression navigate your life. Acceptance is the key. Being objective and creative in how you go through challenging life and people is within your will to tap those keyboards and cameras. Say like life is just a click away!
