Workaholism is a respectable addiction but an undeniable health hazard. In Japan it is called “Karoshi” or “death by overwork”. People in Netherlands are actually getting sick if they try to stop working. The phenomenon is called “leisure illness” where people are really getting sick when they try to relax and unwind. Americans consider hard work and long hours as essential to success. Workaholism is perceived as an asset by any individual or company and not as an addiction. The truth is that workaholism is a compulsive behavioral disorder that poses health risk and actually keeps the individual’s lifestyle out of balance. The usual underlying issues of this behavioral pattern are perfectionism, fear, low self esteem, unmet need for control, image building and simply money.
You earn much then you spend more than what you earn. All it takes is the swipe of a card and all your receivables goes to directly paying what you have worked so hard and been branded as the noble workaholic. You are killing yourself to working what comfort you wish to experience in life and you haven’t even get to taste what it’s like to live like one because you are always in the four walls of your office or your bedroom working on your laptop. The goal to freedom and happiness is not money always. You may be unknowingly pressuring yourself to working hard because of your payables but it is just a lifestyle aftermath. Lessen what you think is your need and really settle for just the necessary.
Overworking is a great health risk. You may admit that you have been sleeping to only as close as three to four hours a day instead of the eight hour sleep. Your body needs rest especially at night because it is where your HGH levels work well. You need to refresh your body, your thoughts and your energy. That is very important for your well being. Maybe you would want to outsource some of the work to a virtual assistant and begin to regain your social life. Delegation is good for you. At least you got an arm extension to help you with your overcommitting self.
