Understanding cataract

What you need to know about cataract

Cataract is opacity in the lens or its capsule that interfere with the vision. Cataracts are not considered serious clinical significance. They only become one when they start to interfere with the vision. Any loss of transparency of the lens is called as cataract. Cataracts effect on function depends on its degree of maturity. Cataract may be developmental or degenerative and obstructs the passage of light.

Cataract surgery: When do you need one?

Cataract surgery improves a person’s quality of life, safety and general function. But not all cataract surgeries were successful. There are patients who failed to benefit from cataract extraction. Opthalmic surgeons believe that patients should determine their need for the surgery rather than them telling patients their cataract became ripe. Surgeons are now relying on vision related quality life as the only determinant for the need of surgery. They perform the procedure only when the cataract interferes with the patient’s ability to perform needed functions. They only operate when there is a likelihood of visual improvement after the operation.

My mother was operated here in the Philippines using LASIK surgery and she was fine. My boss' mother before was operated by manually scraping the cataract and she was not able to see and function after that. When you think you are ready for the aftermath of the surgery and it you feel you will have good results out of it then do it. But if you are not sure or unprepared for the outcome then I guess you need to defer the operation.
