extracurricular activities and burn out

Extracurricular activities are voluntary student led initiatives allowed by schools to exist in all levels of education to complement the curriculum intended for personal development. Although academics are the ideal main priority, employers do look for extracurricular activities to determine if you are best suited for the job like making meaningful contributions, maintaining long term commitments, and maintaining life balance. Students nowadays are face with the special challenge to seek and developed personalized eye catching informative resume minimizing drawback by emphasizing strengths like volunteer work, community involvement, and other extra curricular accomplishments.

Extracurricular activities measure a student’s energy and enthusiasm creating distinct social worlds of varied experiences. Society has been keen on keeping children’s health and well-being by reducing time spent on leisure activities seen as inconsequential or counterproductive out-of-school time. There is a growing interest that views out-of-school time as an opportunity to learn and develop competencies recognized by researchers as important contexts of emotional, social, and civic development.


The federal government is channeling considerable resources into creating organized activities for young people’s out-of-school time as a means to answer progressing problems on teen pregnancy and substance abuse. They found it materialize a good crisis intervention so children and youth alike are being burned out. Organized activities refers to programs that are characterized by structure, with an adult supervision and focuses on skill building where youth greatly benefit on the aspects of development potential. Children’s time are now redirected to fulfilling dedicated channeled activities which are seen by adult as essential to skill building without soliciting voices.


Burn-outs are common to adults but is fast transcending to the young ones because of the kind of activities society is gearing them up to avail for development. And maybe years later find that they have such a robotic community where even babies have to gear up for massive intellectual and social development down to skill building. Children and young ones need time for themselves and not the kind of preprogram activities that was wisely set up as voluntary but in reality is emerging to be an important element in resumes and job applications. Employers and the federal government have been considerably coordinating efforts to promote out-of-school activities. This productive activity comes to be mostly beneficial to the employers because they get to recruit employees with varied skills but massive burn-out and stress features.


The controversial issue of well being is replaced by the context of overscheduled children and youth challenged to manage time, part time jobs, and most of all academic demands. Activities true to its function are appropriate to the child’s ability and development seen as no anxiety-provoking challenge if and only if the child do not spend minimum of 20 hours a week dedicated for these community and after school programs. What about other more important activities that also needs their attention and focus? It seems that children do not know rest and free time anymore adhering to the definition of programmed robots. Later society will found out that these activities are getting children out of their homes most of the time instead of building relationships within families they will become strangers within themselves.

Burnouts are physical and emotional exhaustion accumulated over a long period of time which in its form is likely to progress to psychiatric disorder. This reduced effectiveness and social involvement along with other factors of progressing to become tough, hard and cynical to disrespect and ignoring people. Why can’t society let children be children? Children need time to play and just be a child. If there are any unmanaged substance abuse it is because young ones left our houses at very young age to declare independence. Maybe if we can extend them under our care without until both of them decided, the parent and the child, that he is ready to separate then they wouldn’t be this free to do what they think is right.
